Strapi Alternatives for Developers

Self hosted and open source CMS options to consider when Strapi's upkeep or admin app is more than you need.

Strapi is many teams' first taste of a self hosted headless CMS: open source, run it yourself, no seat bill. The trade is that you own the upgrades, the plugins, and the admin app that ships with it. When the upkeep starts to weigh on you, or the admin app is more than you need, here is where to look.

Five worth a look. We make one of them, so we have put Inhalt first and made the honest case for it, then laid out the rest.

Why teams move on from Strapi

  • Upkeep is on you. Upgrades, plugins, and hosting are all your job.
  • The admin app is fixed. You get what ships, with limited say.
  • Scaling it takes work. Real traffic means real ops.

What to look for

  • Who runs it. Fully hosted, fully self hosted, or a mix.
  • How the schema is defined. In a UI, or in code where you can review it.
  • How much admin app you actually want. Sometimes the answer is none.

The best Strapi alternatives

1. Inhalt

Best for: keeping self hosted and open source, minus the admin app.

Inhalt is ours, so read this as the honest case and weigh the rest freely. It keeps the self hosted, open source part you liked about Strapi and drops the admin app. Your content is exposed through the Model Context Protocol, so an AI client reads it and makes edits by chatting. Changes are checked against your schema and written to typed fields, then staged for review before they publish. One container, your database, your keys.

2. Payload

Best for: the Strapi shape, done a little cleaner.

Payload is open source, self hosted, and code first, with a stronger TypeScript story. A natural next step if you like owning the stack.

3. Directus

Best for: a content layer over a database you already have.

Directus wraps any SQL database and gives you an admin app on top. Handy when the data already exists.

4. Sanity

Best for: dropping the servers for a hosted, flexible model.

Sanity is hosted and flexible, with a studio you shape yourself. You give up some control and pick up a bill, but you drop the upkeep.

5. Contentful

Best for: a straightforward hosted app with less to run.

Contentful is the well known hosted option. Less flexible than Strapi, but far less to maintain.

How to choose

  • Want to keep self hosting but lose the admin app? Inhalt.
  • Want the Strapi shape done better? Payload.
  • Layering content over an existing database? Directus.
  • Ready to stop running servers? Sanity or Contentful.

If the admin app is the part you would rather not run, Inhalt gives you the typed content and the review step without it. Take a look at getting started.

The CMS your AI tools can run.

Inhalt is open source and exposes your content through the Model Context Protocol, so the client you already use becomes the way you manage it.
